In the pre-war opening scene, the Japanese, British, and American naval attaches are netting ducks. The British attache mutters that he wants to meet the Japanese over the sights of 14 inch guns. He would be referring to the King George V-class battleships, which were the most modern battleships the Royal Navy would use in the war. This size of main armament was smaller than other older British battleships because that size was the maximum permitted by the Washington Navy Treaty. HMS Prince of Wales was a battleship in this class and it was sunk by Japanese air power in 1941. Two other King George V battleships (HMS King George V and HMS Howe) served in the Pacific in the closing months. The last two (HMS Anson and HMS Duke of York) were also sent but arrived in the Pacific after the cessation of hostilities.
