A sequel was put together after the films massive critical and financial success. In this sequel Elliot and his family are kidnapped by hostile aliens and E.T., who is revealed to be over 10 million years old and named Zrek, rescues them. Steven Spielberg decided that the story told in the original 1982 classic was the one that needed to be told and was perfect just the way it was and any sequel would only diminish it and would be seen as an obvious cash-grab by the studio.
