In the crypt Sir John is seen blowing out candles while lying to Lawrence about his mother's death and the circumstances surrounding it. Near the end during the fight scene when all the truth about the death of Lawrence's family (mother and brother) and the cause of all his suffering is released the entire Manor catches on fire symbolizing as if all of the lies that Sir John told are now destroying the Talbot family legacy burning it and the visual metaphor is completed when he catches on fire: his twisted lies are 'literally' burning him alive.
