According to writer Steven Pressfield, Dino De Laurentiis had been struggling to get a sequel to King Kong (1976) as the death of Kong at the end obviously posed some problems. De Laurentiis had remarked that because Kong had become a star in his own right, no one would really bat an eye if they just brought him back for another adventure. When Pressfield and Ronald Shusett pitched the idea of Kong being in a coma for years and needing a heart transplant, De Laurentiis quickly hired them to write the film because, as it turns out, it was the best of the sequel pitches he had seen. These rejected ideas included Kong being trained by the U.S. army to become a living weapon and going to Russia to win the Cold War, a version where Kong went to space and a version that seemed to take inspiration from E.T. - L'extra-terrestre (1982) in which Kong would be led around by a group of children
