Kimberly Peirce was inspired by Lars von Trier''s miniseries Il regno (1994) to shoot a scene where a character is giving birth and things go wrong. According to Pierce, the executives were nervous about that moment because they wanted to avoid showing a vagina as much as they could. Pierce shot the scene which did not end up in the film, only as a bonus feature on the Blu-ray edition.
