Klaatu says he's from a planet 250 million miles away, but doesn't name it. Scientists in the movie mention Venus and Mars as the only candidates within our solar system that could sustain life. The Earth and Mars are farthest apart at 401 million kilometers when they are in opposition and both are at aphelion, i.e., farthest from the sun. That distance is 249 million miles, making Mars the most likely candidate. Although environmental circumstances on Mars are less ideal than on Earth, Venus is, by contrast, extremely hostile for organic lifeforms: it has an acidic atmosphere that consists for 96% of carbon dioxide, with 92 times the air pressure of Earth and average temperatures around 867 degrees Fahrenheit (464 Celsius), making it extremely implausible that it could sustain Klaatu's civilization and technology. In addition, even the farthest distance between Venus and Earth is still significantly less than 200 million miles. Later, a newspaper headline dubs Klaatu the "Man from Mars", which seems most likely.
