Producer Michael Douglas considered several directors, including Mark Rydell, Peter Hyams, Adrian Lyne, John Badham, and Tony Scott before settling on John Carpenter. Douglas once told the 'Boston Globe' newspaper that "John has a great sense of style and deals with action masterfully. I knew he'd get to the emotional core of the story."
