Imtiaz Ali had written the first draft of Rockstar in 2007 and wanted to cast Hrithik Roshan as Jordan and Kareena Kapoor as Heer. There were a lot of media speculation surrounding this news. However Hrithik Roshan declined, because he didn't like the story ended with Jordan dying, and that the script focused less on the love between Jordan and Heer, and more on the rise and fall of a musician. Imtiaz Ali rewrote the script, and narrated it to Ranbir Kapoor, but had no intention on casting Kapoor. Still unsatisfied, he went on to direct Love Aaj Kal. In late 2010, he then announced Rockstar and his lead star Ranbir Kapoor.
