In later years after Christopher Isherwood and Jean Ross had fled Nazi Germany, their once intimate friendship became estranged. On his part, Isherwood claimed that he accidentally reneged on a promise to give Ross part of his salary after she secured him a job as a screenwriter in the British film industry. On her part, Ross despised how Isherwood's fictionalized version of herself expressed antisemitic remarks in his original 1937 short story "Sally Bowles". Ross believed Isherwood's character of Sally Bowles permanently occluded her lifelong efforts as a political writer and activist. Shortly before Ross' death of cervical cancer in 1973, Isherwood and Ross reconciled.
