Jonathan Groff was cast for the role of Smith on recommendation by his friend, Carmen Cuba (casting director), while rehearsing for a Broadway revival production of Little Shop of Horrors. Groff was determined not wanting to mimic Hugo Weaving directly but instead he would watch a downloaded YouTube compilation video of Weaving's performance from the trilogy of over dinners to get a proper impressionist performance.
