Prior to Dec. 7, 1941, Navy intelligence chief Edwin Layton (portrayed by Patrick Wilson in the movie) was considered an alarmist by his fellow officers. The day before the attack, as Layton entered the officers' dining room one of them joked, "Here comes Layton with his usual Saturday crisis!"
