Pinbacker was inspired by the character of Sergeant Pinback in Dark Star (1974). The character's disfiguring burns were influenced by the injuries suffered by F1 driver Niki Lauda in a fiery crash, which was later dramatized in Rush (2013). That film starred Daniel Brühl and Chris Hemsworth, who both starred alongside Chris Evans (Mace) in the MCU.
