In the scene where a frilly iguana hisses at Max in the desert, Graham Gow, a herpetologist and the owner of Graham Gow's Reptile World in Humpty Doo, was off-screen tugging on the iguana's tail to make it hiss. He was not credited but he worked on other films such as the Crocodile Dundee series. He was bitten by snakes about 146 times and died of cancer in 2005, after being bitten by a death adder. He also told a reporter that the bizarre punk/goth extras in the Bartertown scenes were not acting, that was their real lifestyle and look, and they were cast for that reason.
