When Skyship 1 crashes into the radio tower at the Dover Missile base, it loses all forward momentum. As the 'gravity compensator' has been shot out, forward speed is all that is keeping it aloft. The gradual loss of 'gravity compensation' would have ceased and the airship become 250 tons of dead weight and probably collapsed the tower and crashed immediately. There might be a system to store energy for the compensation system but this is not explained. The gauge is only shown to move at the start of the trip when the compensation system is started and then drop (slowly) when it is destroyed.
