Near the end of the movie it is shown that the creatures can be killed with just a shotgun. Why nobody else has tried this way of killing them before or used even more sophisticated weapons is never explained. The only reason the creature was able to be killed with just the shotgun is because the daughter had placed her implant to the microphone and turned the volume up to maximum. This caused the creature to fully open the shell protecting the soft tissue underneath.
