Before the final battle one of the Navy officers says the Yamato had a 16-inch armored belt. The film is set in 1942, and historically the amount of information on the Yamato by the US Navy was very limited. They estimated the ship displaced only 35,000 tons and possessed 9-16 inch guns. In real life, the Yamato displaced over 75,000 tons and carried 9-18.1 inch guns, the largest ever mounted on a ship. Much of what is known about the Yamato wasn't discovered until after the war, this included the amount of armor she carried.
