During the streetcar chase, Danny uses his pistol to repeatedly shatter the car windshield before removing it and exiting, rather than simply climbing out of the door.
EDIT:
Exiting through the door of a car, being pushed by a speeding streetcar, wouldn't have been feasible under ANY circumstance. The windshield would have been the safest and most stable route to get inside the streetcar.
