Retrieving the stones in the past would prevent crucial events from happening. However the movies sets that :
a) Those pasts become alternate time-lines, not affecting mainline present.
b) They would return the stones to their time-lines to not mess them up. However a bunch of those time-lines would remain unfix-able with Thanos dead and Loki escaped.
