Hans Beimler was the only person to successfully escape Dachau in the period from 1933-1939. In the war years escapes were more common, The Dachau website gives a figure of 582 for the later years of the war, although it is not known how many were recaptured (or, indeed, staged: the prisoners being allegedly 'shot while trying to escape').
