It would be completely impossible for a WWII submarine to make a torpedo run on a cruiser so shortly after it was submerged as close to the cruiser as shown here in the short time it takes from the depth charge drop and the torpedo hits. Even if the sub commander would not deem the risk far too great before he has enough distance to at least break sonar contact, the boat has to come up to periscope depth, come around and aim, and be at least far enough from the target at that stage to give the torpedoes their minimum arming distance. All of that positioning takes far more time, not the least because these subs were far slower than any cruiser, especially while submerged and running on their electric drive.
