This movie (along with most of popular culture since the 15th century) confuses two mythical creatures - relatively harmless Mermaids who were half-woman/half-fish, as opposed to bloodthirsty predators the Sirens who were half-woman/half-bird, and lured men to their deaths with an irresistible singing voice.
