Although almost every scene in this movie is meant to be tongue-in-cheek humor about the army, however, there is no way that any army platoon, if the leader or drill sergeant is taken out sick or otherwise injured as with Sgt. Hulka, would be allowed to "finish basic training on their own," as remarked by General Barnicke at the pass in review (drill show). In such a case a replacement drill sergeant would have been assigned to the platoon immediately.
