While the books explain that "Wormtail" is Pettigrew's childhood nickname, that backstory is omitted from the films. Yet, in the Prisoner of Azkaban film adaptation, Timothy Spall's character is referred to exclusively as Peter Pettigrew, whereas in this film, he is referred to exclusively as Wormtail. To movie-goers unfamiliar with the books, it is as if the character has been inexplicably renamed.
