The depiction of the failed Northfield robbery is nothing close to what actually happened. The Pinkertons were not involved, nor did the citizens know they were coming, and the body count is greatly exaggerated. In fact, the robbers cased the town before the robbery to plot their routes. When the robbery commenced, Northfield citizen, J.S Allen, approached to see what these suspicious people were doing in the bank. He was confronted by robber Clell Miller and at gunpoint told to keep quiet. Allen managed to break free and run away, shouting, "Get your guns, boys ! They're robbing the bank!"It was the citizens of Northfield taking up arms that shot it out with the robbers. Robbers Clell Miller and Bill Chadwell were shot and killed in the streets. In the crossfire, Swedish immigrant, Nicolaus Gustavson, whom did not understand English and thus didn't understand the situation, was shot in the head. He died a few days later. In the bank, the three employees were held at gunpoint. Bookkeeper Joseph Heywood lied that the safe was on a timer and couldn't be opened-when in fact it was unlocked the whole time. One of the employees made a break for it out a back door. He was shot in the shoulder but made good his escape and survived. With their cover blown, the robbers grabbed loose change in the bank and ran out the front of the bank. As he left, Jesse shot Haywood in the head-killing him. Under fire from multiple armed citizens, the robbers made a dash out of town. They didn't take cover in other buildings like in the film.In the end, two robbers and two civilians were dead. All remaining six robbers-including Jesse, were wounded-two severely. The gang decided afterwards to split up, Jesse and Frank going together and the remainder going another direction. A posse of Minnesota civilians tracked the Younger Brothers and Charlie Pitts to a swamp. In the shootout that followed, Pitts was killed. The Younger Brothers were captured and arraigned on various charges including robbery and murder.Bob Younger died in prison of tuberculous. Cole and Jim were paroled in 1901. A year later, Jim Younger committed suicide.
