It is noted in the Trivia section that in an interview director Duncan Jones confirmed some of the plot's backstory, that an original Sam worked his three year shift on the moon before his clones took over. Eve was born shortly before the original Sam left for the moon, and his video communications with his wife were recycled for the clones. This does hold up, as the wife's messages seem genuine rather than done by an actress. The first message has an edit in it that Sam notices, whereas if they were faked by an actress they would be flawless. The wife's second message also seems to allude to the potentially unethical deal Sam took to allow clones of himself, with the wife being troubled by it; this can only be explained by the transmission being originally sent to a real Sam.Yet this complicates the timing. The clone who escaped the base was called Clone 6 by a voiceover news broadcast, meaning the clone who died, at the end of his 3-year stint, was Clone 5. Eve is now 15, which would correspond to five Sams completing 3-year contracts, yet if the original Sam also served, then Clone 5 would have served through Eve's 18th birthday. This can be explained if perhaps one of the clones was defective, or if Clone 6 was a misnomer and the new broadcast ought to have called him Sam 6, meaning he was the fifth not sixth clone. Regardless, if this was what the writers meant they ought to have clarified it, and the timing issue seems like an oversight given that the 15-year span works perfectly for five clones.
