The story cheats deliberately. Chapter 6 ends with JuJu, treed by a lion, swinging away through the upper canopy. Despite roars from both the lion and a leopard closing in, Tim spots JuJu and happily runs to him. Only aware of the lion's presence and approach as he reaches JuJu, boy and monkey attempt escape. Juju scampers up a vine while the lion pulls Tim from the tree he climbs, roughing him up on the ground prior to eating him. Chapter 7 resumes the story with JuJu and Tim getting up a tree successfully while the lion and leopard meet, fighting each other savagely, which enables Tim and JuJu to climb down from the tree and walk away safely.
