When Mount Vesuvius erupted, the ash cloud contained highly toxic gases which engulfed the city in just under fifteen minutes. The gases were so toxic that there were reports of some witnesses to the explosion, miles away, dying from inhaling segments from the edge of the dust and ash cloud. It would have been impossible for the type of fights and intense heavy breathing action seen to have taken place in the city, since everyone in the city had been killed nearly instantly by heat, ash, and toxic fumes.
