It's highly improbable that a German U-boat would have been allowed in the Med during that time. Both of potential access points to the sea were then controlled by the Royal Navy (Gibraltar and Suez) and allowing a U-boat into the region would have been ill-advised due to its potential threat to British shipping and the raging Spanish Civil War at the time.Additionally, stopping a vessel on the high seas was an act of piracy and would have been treated as such. Accordingly, the Nazis would have had to sink the freighter and murder the crew or else their interception would have been reported and the Royal Navy would have taken action.
