When Salinger looks through the bullet holes in the pillar back toward the hotel, each hole lines directly up with the location of the shooter. This would not be possible from that distance, because the shooter would need to aim up to account for bullet drop, meaning the holes in the pillar would point well above the origin of the bullet.
