ADM Isoroku Yamamoto's Chief of Staff was not named Jiro Kobe. The Chief of Staff Combined Fleet was VADM Matome Ugaki. Ugaki was in the plane following Yamamoto's when he was killed, and though seriously injured, survived the crash. He was later made Commander of a Battleship Division that consisted of all three of Yamamoto's former wartime flagships (Yamato, Musashi, and Nagato). and was present at both the Battle of the Philippine Sea and Leyte Gulf. By 1945, Ugaki was Commander of the 5th Air Fleet, which was heavily involved in kamikaze operations. On August 15, 1945, Ugaki listened to the Emperor's Broadcast, then stripped all rank from his uniform and boarded a torpedo bomber for his own kamikaze mission. The plane never reached the U.S. Fleet, being lost somewhere at sea. Ugaki's wartime diary was later condensed and published under the title "Fading Victory".
