This movie, as well as the sequel, feature fast moving, flesh eating scarabs, most notably as part of Imhotep's punishment. The species of scarabs worshiped in ancient Egypt is the Scarabaeus Sacer, a type of dung beetle. It's quite slow and, while its bite can be painful, it is not carnivorous and cannot pierce the skin let alone burrow under the skin.
