The bulk of the film takes place over a year after the creatures arrive. That means any crops on the farm were planted by the Abbott family. But there is no way a single family, without the use of machines or animals (horses, mules, and all other farm animals presumably being killed by the creatures since they wouldn't know to keep quiet), could plant as many acres as seen in the film. The old saying in the years before farm machinery was "40 acres and a mule" for a family farm, and the Abbotts wouldn't even have the mule to help pull the plow.At most the family could plant only a few acres. Nor would they have as many acres in corn as seen in the film since it would be too much for the family to consume. Instead they would have a wider variety of crops on much smaller acreage to vary their diet and get other nutrients.
