Although a Special Forces officer, Troutman wears no Special Forces metal "Long Tab" insignia on his uniform. The Special Forces insignia he wears on his cap is normally worn on the right breast, above the pocket for Officers.
Special Forces wasn't a separate MOS until 1983. No one would have a Long Tab in 1982 when the movie was released.
