When in 1955 George reveals to Marty that he writes science fiction stories, Marty says: "I didn't know you did anything creative", but in 1985 Marty already knows that his father writes (and is about to publish) a book.Marty actually wouldn't know this because he goes to 1955 (and returns) with his current knowledge and memories. This is why he is so confused at the end, seeing the house different, the change in his family, thinking the car was wrecked, etc.
