Paul Toombes is introduced to his new leading lady Carol Clayton for the first time as the scene is about to be shot and is surprised because he says that he doesn't have a leading lady, however he seems to know that he has dialogue for the scene with her. If he didn't know that the character existed then who did he think the dialogue was for, dialogue in films are scripted and not made up as the scene goes on.
