It's been argued that the amount of money Richard has throughout the film isn't enough to purchase the items he bought, such as the hair dye, the janitor uniform, renting a spare room, among others.However, just before Kimball walks into the train tunnel after waking up in the woods on his second night of escape, he's thumbing through a wallet that was in the clothes he acquired at the hospital. Any cash or credit cards could've been enough seed money for him to start his life on the run.
