Melanie admits at the the end of the film all of her earlier actions were an act to get revenge, but in several of the scenes she was alone, panicking, and talking to herself about how to escape and survive. She also thought up an escape plan, which very nearly succeeded, by contacting a waiting plane in order to leave the island. None of this makes sense if she was only pretending the entire time.
