John tells Anna that when you re-experience your memories with the aid of a Mindscape operator you occasionally may see the operator in the distance but will be unable to identify him. This is obviously what happens to John when he is in jail and Lundgren goes through Johns memories. It is not possible for John to have a memory of confronting Robert, Anna's stepfather, about having him followed by this mysterious man, because at the time the memories were made he had never been followed. The mysterious man is part of him re-experiencing his memories at a much later date with Lundgrens help. Thus having memories of chasing Lundgren who was not there does not make sense as at the time he never chased anybody.
