The Japanese soldiers begin panicking and one of them releases the prisoners at the sight of advancing airplanes. While Hiroshima had occurred three days earlier its effects were not widely understood by the Japanese public yet. Furthermore, Japanese cities had been bombed extensively by conventional ordinance for some time, so there would not be any reason to assume that this was an atomic weapon, even if the power of one was understood.
