After the bar fight, the three sons mention that Scott had gotten into a fight as a young man because someone called him a draft-dodger. The gravestone later in the film has Scott being born in 1940. While Robert Duvall would have been old enough to be drafted in the Korean War, his character Scott would have been 13 years old when the War ended.
