Before the events of the film. Thanos had already spent decades invading planets to reduce some populations to their halves, like Gamora's planet (without acknowledging the continuity change of Gamora going from the last of her kind, to part of the half that Thanos spared). While is also, clear that Thanos was aware of how half of the Asgardian people had already died, regardless of him (in the previous Thor film). So when he snaps half the population out of existence. The movie doesn't specify if Thanos makes a point out of respecting the planets whose population he had already halved in the past (He does erases Drax, despite having already invaded his planet and killed his family). Neither is explained, if Thanos makes a point of respecting populations like the Asgardians, whose populations had already, arguably already lost more than half their people, regardless of his actions. (Thanos doesn't even have trouble decreasing the Asgardian population further at the start of the film, despite being aware of their demise). It doesn't explain either, how he knew he had killed the exact half in his early genocidal trips, it would had been impossible for anyone to keep an exact track.
