It is never explained how The Mother is able to get out of the house to go hunting at night, when in order to get out of the caves and basement, she'd need to get through two doors that cannot be opened from the inside.It'd be easy to assume the man that dug the caves also created a hidden way to unlock the basement door, that way he could trap his victims in but still be able to exit himself.Also, since the full size of the caves are never shown it is possible they contain a secret exit.
