When walking up the ramp to the stargate on earth, Col. O'Neil holds his gun with his index finger on the trigger. No trained soldier would do that unless he intends to fire the gun. Soldiers (and other people handling guns) are trained not to put their finger on the trigger unnecessarily for safety.
