Characters (including government officials) still call the capital, St. Petersburg after the start of WWI. The city was renamed Petrograd in 1914 because St. Petersburg was considered too German. It continued to be called that until it was renamed Leningrad in 1924. (It's original name was later restored in 1991 when the Soviet Union was falling).
