When the Titan missiles are launched in a last-ditch attempt to destroy the comet, we are told that the comet is 14 hours from impact, and that the Titans will detonate in 20 minutes. Since the comet is moving at 26 miles per second, that puts it over 1 million miles from the Earth, and there is no way that the missiles could reach it in that time.
