The dialogue suggests that the film is set in 1940, when the short story upon which the movie is based was written. However, portions were filmed in a real store during off-hours, so there are countless things from the '60s featured throughout, including vehicles, clothing, hi-fi record players and other electronics, and the prominently featured book "Alfred Hitchcock's Monster Museum," which was first published in 1965.
