Although white tubular gas-discharge lamps were available since the 1900s, their complexity made installation for a moving-train implausible. More modern fluorescent tubes weren't commercially available until 1938, four years after the movie/novel's time-setting of 1934. And adequate light diffusing covers were not feasible before acrylic plastic was commercialized in the late 1930s, as glass was not produced with the right refractive properties to sufficiently blend light from incandescent bulbs.
