When Diane asks Dr. Lesh to switch the TV back on while they settle in for the night watch (at about 55 minutes), it takes a moment to achieve vertical sync, during which a color-bar stripe and black bands are visible between frames. If the TV were truly on an unused channel and receiving static, that would not appear; that it does reveals it's a prepared "static" signal.
