Peter, acting as Dobbs, breaks into Dr. Carter's room by sliding the "Do Not Disturb" sign between the double doors to push the latch out of the striker. From the inside shot, you can see that the door handle on the right is moving up to release the latch as the handle itself is moving up. This is something that would not occur even if the latch mechanism was pushed back, as the mechanism is still locked. Sliding a card in to push back the latch merely moves the latch into the door, it does not unlock the mechanism. All of this occurs prior to the card even reaching the level of the latch.In addition, the door begins to open and is pulled back shut prior to the point where the card has reached the level of the latch due to the latch having already been withdrawn when the outside doorknob was turned.
