The Caesar wouldn't have made the switch of power on the battle field alone and without witnesses. Marcus Aurelius would have already know of the corruption and treachery of Commodus. In fact, he speaks of it with Maximus when he tells him of his plan to pass the power on to him. He would have waited until he returned to Rome with control of the military and the Senate.
